Ford Motor Company handed over $12,000 grant to Kuwait Water Association as part of the 2016 Ford Motor Company Conservation and Environmental Grants initiative. Dr. Saleh Al-Muzaini and Ahmad Al Kofahi, both directors of Kuwait Water Association (KWA) proposed the Periodic Statistical Study in Educational Facilities for Measuring the Water Consumption in Kuwait. Kuwait has the highest water consumption level in the world, with a daily average of around 500 litres per capita, according to Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR).

The winning project which was approved by the Ministry of Education in Kuwait and has been implemented by Kuwait Water Association  divided into two phases:

Phase 1:

It has already been implemented. During this phase the study team has visited the 13 schools nominated by the Ministry of Education representing different governorates in Kuwait. During the field visits, the study team met the administrative and technical services in the schools to explain the goals and the importance of the study. The team has checked all water facilities in schools to gather preliminary information on water use. Accordingly, a comprehensive questionnaire was designed. The questionnaire consists of three parts measuring water awareness level, general information about the schools (spaces, number of students, number of staff, school age, plantings, irrigation methods, number and types of water faucets), and water meters readings. The questionnaires, which were officially handed to schools administrations, were filled out under the supervision of the study team and the Ministry of Education/Department of Educational facilities and planning. The full preliminarily report of phase 1 has been delivered officially to the MOE by KWA including field visits outcomes, photos, expert suggestions, results, conclusions, ..etc.

Phase 2:

The collected data in phase 1 will be analyzed statistically to measure the level of water awareness in the targeted schools, and to set up the concepts of water management in the schools, as well as to know the real consumption of water. By knowing the amount of water consumed by each school we can calculate the rate and average rate of consumption of each school per day which will give us facts on the water situation in public schools in Kuwait and information about the reforms to be carried out as well as the water awareness amount needed.
